Chain Emails

October 23, 2008 at 8:14 pm (Uncategorized)

1. A Chain email is the same thing as a chain letter but, it is a chain email meaning that it is all electronic and therefore clutters up your inbox with useless information, which is many times false.

2. A typical chain letter consists of a message that attempts to induce the recipient to make a number of copies of the letter and then pass them on to as many recipients as possible.

3. A pyramid scheme is a non-sustainable business model that involves the exchange of money primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, without any product or service being delivered. It has been known to come under many guises.

4. Chain emails do more damage than spam because spam is filtered out of your inbox into a separate file so theoretically you would never have to read it unless you wanted to but, chain email appears in your inbox and therefore you have to read it or most likely will.

1. I think chain emails are exciting for some people because they always come with some scary or strange story that happened to someone who didn’t forward the email on or someone who ignored it and that makes people want to send them on.

2. Funny: The Postman Rings Twice, But E-mails Forever and Dobson v. the FCC. Scary: Happy Holidazed and Confused and As if $3.99 a gallon wasn’t scary enough!

1.) DRM is an acronym for Digital Rights Management, a broad term used to describe a number of techniques for restricting the free use and transfer of digital content. DRM is used in a number of media, but is most commonly found in video and music files.

2.) The RIAA is an acronym for the Recording Industry Association of America, which is composed of large companies that oversee the recording and distribution of music in the US. Approximately 90% of recording companies or distributors are members of the RIAA. The association’s goals are now primarily steered toward copyright protection.

3.) MPAA stands for The Motion Picture Association of America, originally the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), is a non-profit business and trade association based in the United States, which was formed to advance the business interests of movie studios.

4.) RealDVD is an easy-to-use application that lets you save your DVDs, movies, TV shows, or home DVDs to your PC digitally and legally.

5.) EFF is the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an advocacy organization established to address social and legal issues arising from the impact on society of the increasingly pervasive use of computers as a means of communication and distribution of information.

Article 1: Talks about a battle that is brewing over a secretive intellectual property agreement being negotiated by the U.S. and several other nations. Two public interest groups filed a lawsuit this week to gain access to the documents.

Article 2: Says that the EFF and Public Knowledge took their complaints about the secret treaty a step further and filed a lawsuit to gain access to negotiating materials. In a letter dated June 11, the groups asked for a comprehensive list of materials dealing with ACTA.

Search Engines!

October 1, 2008 at 8:22 pm (Uncategorized)

3 search engines that I have found are yahoo.com, google.com and dogpile.com.

When I looked up one of my favorite singers, Bob Marley, on yahoo.com the first website listed was www.bobmarely.com, on google.com it also was bobmarley.com, and same with dogpile.com. They were all the same.

I kind of think that google is better than yahoo and dogpile because it doesn’t have a bunch of other adds on its homepage like the other two do, it’s just the search bar. And also when I used dogpile to look up other search engines it gave me other sights to get the information from instead of the sight itself like google and yahoo did when I looked up other search engines using them.

When I looked up Barack Obama on google the first 3 websites it gave me were BarackObama.com, barackobama.com/about/, and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama. The first website was the official website and had a place where you could donate money and all the recent news on Obama. The second is like a summary of Obama’s whole life and even some things about his family and other links. The third is an article on wikipedia about Obama’s whole life from beginning to end.

On yahoo the first website it gave me was the same as the first on google, the second was http://www.barackobama.com/index.php? which had a lot of responses from Obama to different questions and other people’s speeches. The third was also the same as google.

On dogpile the first was the same as for yahoo and google, although the second and third were much different, the second being “Jobs to beat McCain” sponsored by grassrootscampaigns.com which included plans for 2008, and the third being “Barack Obama Exposed” sponsored by humanevents.com which is a report that they don’t show you but you can buy it.

When I looked up Sarah Palin on google the first three websites it showed me were en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin, gov.state.ak.us, and palinforvp.blogspot.com. The first one was telling about her life, the second includes the latest news, events, photos, audio/video and speeches that have to do with her, and the third was a support blog.

On yahoo the first website it gave me was the same for google, the second was www.johnmccain.com/about/governorpalin.htm, and the third was palinforvp.blogspot.com.
